Reducing Time to Market with Real-time Business Intelligence and Metadata Reporting

Posted by Josh Howard on May 12, 2009

As part of the Products team at Embarcadero, one of the best parts of my job is getting time in front of customers.  There is nothing more important or more valuable than getting honest feedback from those customers that use our tools everyday. This is an exercise that is critical after any new product launch for understanding if the product is meeting its intended purpose.

We launched the ER/Studio Enterprise Portal in August of 2008 (see the press release) with the primary goal of providing a Google like search engine for metadata that could be accessed by  the data modeling teams, development teams, business analysts and executives. The product launch was one of the most successful in Embarcadero history (until the launch of Embrcadero All-Access in February 2009), attracting new market segments  and pulling key customers from our CA ERwin and Sybase PowerDesigner competition.

So, it was with great pleasure to sit down and chat with a senior manager of a enterprise data management group of a very large Fortune 500 financial services company, and get a feel for how they were using one of Embarcadero’s newest tools, ER/Studio Enterprise Portal.

The team of eight are responsible for the company’s data governance and data quality initiatives and support more than 175 systems. They have been a loyal ER/Studio and ER/Studio Enterprise Repository client for the past three years and use the product religiously for all of their data modeling tool needs. So, it was no surprise that they were one of the first early adopters of the Enterprise Portal. What I learned from the interview was that they were in the process of launching a new business unit and a group of finance and business analysts were required to access the corporate metadata to run various risk models. The Enterprise Portal enabled them access to a centralized self-service reporting tool that allowed them to analyze the metadata stored in the ER/Studio Repository through a business friendly, search-engine like interface.

As a result, both the business and IT users were able to access the metadata and other information needed to make strategic business decisions to launch the new business unit more quickly. “With ER/Studio Enterprise Portal, the team can instantly access enterprise data assets for use in systems development, integration, data governance and regulatory compliance. The powerful reporting and search technology makes it easier for the team to share data stored in  the ER/Studio Repository,” said the manager of the Enterprise Data Management group. “And, its web-based nature enables the Enterprise Data Management team and users company-wide to effortlessly browse, search and report on metadata quickly and accurately.

I love to get honest feedback and hear how our customers are using our tools.

You can read the full Case Study online in our Customer Stories section.

The ER/Studio Enterprise Portal allows you to communicate your ER/Studio Repository metadata across the organization in an easy-to-use browser-based reporting tool to:

  • Reduce metadata redundancy
  • Centralize reporting and processes
  • Increase compliance with data standards and regulations
  • Eliminate stand-alone spreadsheets and documents

You can download your own Enteprise Portal trial on Embarcadero’s download trial page

Barclays Wealth Cashes in on ER/Studio for Data Modeling

Posted by Josh Howard on May 5, 2009

Jennifer Devine, Senior Architect at Barclays Wealth recently did a product review of Embarcadero’s database design and data modeling tool, ER/Studio,  for the Information Management Magazine on May 1, 2009. Read the  article on the Information Management Magazine Website.
It is a great article that quickly summarizes how a major global financial services provider like Barclays uses Embarcadero ER/Studio across both Oracle and SQL Server to solve some serious pain points this group was experiencing around standardization and collaboration. They needed a stable data modeling tool that allowed them both to enforce a common tool across the business while providing a location to store and share the enterprise resource data for education and communication purposes for technical and non-technical employees. Ms. Devine goes into further detail about Barclays’ selection criteria, why they made the switch to ER/Studio and list of product strengths.
